CEIP JOSÉ RAMÓN SÁNCHEZ INNOVATION PROJECT

 INTRODUCTION

The innovation project that I have decided to explain takes place at the CEIP José Ramón Sànchez (Astillero, Cantabria) a lay and public school. The project is called  ‘cuento contigo’ and it started in 2018 because this school is relatively new and, from 2008 to 2018 the number of students has increased, nowadays there are 494, so this presents a challenge. Also, this school changes the teachers frequently and there is a huge diversity of families (CEIP José Ramón Sánchez, 2018).

CONTEXT

El Astillero municipality is located on the bay of Santander south endpoint, it is surrounded by Carmago, Piélagos, Villaescusa, Medio Cudeyo y Marina de Cudeyo municipalities. The transport net is excellent to go by car, by RENFE or FEVE. El Astillero is populated by many people, and the environment is also good (CEIP José Ramón Sánchez, 2018).

Currently, El Astillero is considered one of the more dynamic and innovative villages of Cantabria, there is a lot of associations and also sports offers so that is an incentive for living here. Because of that, recently it has received a new population, nowadays there is a lot of young population and also 10 percent of the population are immigrants. The total number of people that live here is 18524 (CEIP José Ramón Sánchez, 2018).

Talking about the physique characteristics of the school, it is new, it consists of two floors and it has a covered courtyard. Also, it has a library, a computer room, a psychomotricity room, an assembly hall, and a canteen (CEIP José Ramón Sánchez, 2018).

 According to CEIP José Ramón Sánchez (2018), during the year 2017/2018, they did a survey to know about the socio-cultural context of the school to adapt the educative project to reality. So then they knew that the families have an upper-middle socioeconomic level (32 percent of the families have university studies and only 10 percent only have the high school title). Most of the families are two-parent families. There is also a 3 percent of foreign families. One important fact to consider is that 89 percent of families have good internet networking and devices.

WHAT THE PROJECT IS ABOUT?

This project is based on a gradual establishment of active methodologies. The first goal is to involve students in the teaching-learning process, but also increase the sense of belonging to the educational community, improve linguistic performance, involve families, create real-life communicative situations, improve motivation, encourage the use of the library and take advantage of students diversity (CEIP José Ramón Sánchez, 2018).

According to CEIP José Ramón Sánchez (2018), the main plans of the project are:

1.English reading club.

2. One travel bag that is gonna travel to the different classes to work the reading topics of the week.

3. Storytelling.

4. Puppet theatre for childhood education by volunteers of primary education.

5. A library corner created by children and families.

6. ‘The painter’ scholar magazine.

7. Scholar theatre.

8. Radio theatre ‘radiolegio’ made by 5 and 6 students grade of primary.

9. Reading sponsorships program in which the oldest of the school help to the youngest.

10. Music around the school.

11. School assembly with two class representatives per class to improve educational measures.

12. TEACCH methodology for especial necessities students.

The last plan called TEACCH methodology means treatment and education of children with autism and associated communication problems. It was created by Eric Schopler in the 70’, and it is focused on people with autism. The purpose is to adapt the time, space and work system (Maestra Especial PT, 2015).

As CEIP José Ramón Sánchez (2018) said this project is so important for this school because after doing a test for 3 students grade of primary in 2018 they found that they need to improve their linguistic competence, which they think that is essential nowadays. So they decide to start doing this by improving learning to learn competence and then solve this problem.

  COMPARISON

This project also takes similarities with the one made this year at the school of the Salesianos (Santander, Cantabria) called ‘Mis padres también van al cole’ that our teacher Lucía send us. ‘El Reloj de la Familia’ is a plan from the Salesianos innovation project for making monthly workshops in which families can participate (el diario montañés, 2019) and as we can see in the project ‘cuento contigo’ of the CEIP José Ramón Sánchez, this school also want to improve the families participation by doing workshops. The only difference is that the topics of the workshops of the different schools are not to improve the same competences.

Another fact of the Salesianos project is that it is based on real-life digital activities to make reflexive thinking (el diario montañés, 2019) also as we can see in the project of the CEIP José Ramón Sánchez that the children have to make real-life activities, so they will work the learning to learn competence.

Both schools want to improve their technologies and their methodologies because they are including electronic devices making children competent in learning to learn competence. So something that they both show is the desire for improvement.

WHAT DO I THINK?

In my opinion, it is an interesting project because I love reading and the theatre, and I would have liked that when I was in school this project would have been possible. Although there are some plans that seem to be difficult because first of all, they need the student’s motivation. But in general, I like the idea and the enthusiasm of the school to do this. I agree with the thought that linguistic competence is very important nowadays because we need to know how to introduce ourselves efficiently in the labor market for the future and talk with fluency in any situation.

Also, something that I hadn’t listen to before was the TEACCH methodology, and this was the thing that I more liked reading the project. I think that children with special necessities are the forgotten ones in education.

The most I liked about it was the desire to improve the sense of belonging to the educational community because with the reading sponsorship plan in which the oldest of the school help to the youngest I think that they will eradicate bullying, so I suppose that it could be a good measure to do it in all the schools.

The music around the school could be something different that could help our children to achieve relaxation and concentration. Also, the best way of communication with the families I think is what this school has planed by doing the corner of the library with the help of the parents too.

To conclude, I think that this project will work and will help to improve the quality of the school.

    • They don’t specify it in their annual program, what they say is that the innovation project is for all the students to improve their learning to learn and linguistic competence, and the TEACCH methodology plan is focused on especial necessities students. So I suppose that if they have this plan they also have especial necessities students.
